CARE-GIVERS SUPPORT GROUP
Support group for parents & caregivers of sex abuse
survivors
Child
sexual abuse is a painful situation, but with support children
and families can heal. Caregivers need to call on and depend on
their support network to stay centered and focused on helping
themselves and their child at difficult times.
Child
victims who receive support from their caregivers and receive
counseling recover far better in the long run. Besides
getting the sexual abuse victim treatment and helping them
through their recovery, the caregiver often puts their needs for
support on the back burner. Support to the caregiver is
vital in order for him/her to reach out and help the child
victim.
As a
caregiver for a child survivor, it is easy to neglect your own
needs and sometimes even becoming ineffective due to stress,
guilt and emotional grief. If you are exhausted, stressed,
worried and feeling over whelmed or scared, angry or helpless,
it is all the more important for you to increase efforts to
attend to your emotional needs.
Caregivers often experience grief when they learn their child
was sexually abused. Many professionals who work with victims of
abuse use a framework of grief in stages. These stages can
be similar to those that a person would experience if they lost
a loved one. Through this group, we will learn about the
stages of grief, and support each other through the difficulties
and the trauma that resurfaces for survivors throughout their
recovery. We will also be working through the book,
"Allies in Healing" by Laura Davis.
All
